Sutherland photo trip review
At the end of April 2011 I spent a week in the Scottish Highlands, exploring the landscapes and photographing the wildlife of Sutherland and the northern parts of Wester Ross.

This took me to a number of beautiful locations, in particular:
- Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve
- Handa Island
- Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach
- Cape Wrath
- Culag Woods, Lochinver
- Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve
- The mountains and moorland of Coigach and Assynt
- The coastline of Wester Ross
- Cromarty Firth
In the end I managed to find and photograph a total of 20 species (with varying degrees of success!):
Mammals (4): Red Deer, Highland Cattle, Common Seal, Bottlenose Dolphin

Birds (16): Heron, Oystercatcher, Great Skua, Shag, Fulmar, Common Tern, Great Black-Backed Gull, Razorbill, Buzzard, Shelduck, Avocet, Greylag Goose, Curlew, Meadow Pipit, Dipper, Pied Wagtail

I was blessed with fantastic weather for the week and it yielded a good number of new images that I’m very pleased with. As time allows in between other projects over the next few weeks I’ll be posting more in-depth articles about some of the locations in the list above with more images and useful info for photographers visting the area, so keep in touch via:
