Hi John, there are 2 factors contributing to the effect you describe. Firstly, this was shot very early in the morning, if I remember rightly this was around dawn and it was cloudy so the light wasn't good at all which is why the overall colour in the scene is very washed out. Also I was shooting this video through a 500mm lens so the depth of field is compressed. The ground between me and the deer was covered in low gorse bushes and the ones nearest to me are visible but very out of focus along the bottom edge of the frame.

Thanks for sharing.

Why does the image seem a bit gray or like there is some or wash? It looks a bit gray. When I tried to crop the bottom of the image (just hiding it with something blocking that part of the screen) I did not notice it as much.

Where you shooting very low so the tops of the underbrush is creating the washed out colors?

The crab photo is amazing and its great you had a wide angle lens to get that. I would not have thought about the f/8 for sharpness. Love the Cuba images. Its on my list to visit since part of my heritage stems from this place.

Hi Liz thanks for the comment, there was a trick to that shot which I'll try and explain. These crabs are often preyed upon by seabirds so they are very sensitive to movement around them especially shadows passing over them, the moment they detect that they disappear into their shells like lightning!

So I had to stay very still and wait for them to come close to me. The image was shot with a wideangle lens at 30mm that was only a few inches from the crab. The depth of field is quite small at that tiny distance between lens and subject so I used an aperture of f/8 to make sure that both legs and head were sharp.
