I took advantage of a great forecast to set out for the New Forest early one morning, despite it being the first really cold day of autumn. Beautiful dawn light combined with a hard frost turning the ground white is a magical combination that usually provides a great colour palette for any subject. I was in the north of the forest looking for fallow deer during the annual rutting season, when I saw a small group of 5 does and a single buck.

I wasn’t in perfect cover so the group were able to sense my presence at a distance of around 150 feet. As they broke away at a brisk run I was able to isolate the male from the pack and by panning with him I managed to get this shot with the head and body sharp, but some movement retained in the cantering legs, which gives the image a nice sense of impetus.
