Anyone who visits Cuba and has an interest in wildlife and natural history should make a point of experiencing Las Salinas, a series of shallow saltwater lagoons at the southern edge of the Cienaga de Zapata National Park. This ecosystem supports large numbers of wading birds, waterfowl and healthy numbers of raptors. As well as migrating American Flamingo the shallow waters are perfect territory for Brown Pelicans, Great Egrets and the subject of this image, the Great Blue Heron.
Largest of all the New World herons, the Great Blue is a magnificent sight on the ground and in flight. It’s ostensibly similar to the Grey Heron that we’re familiar with in the UK and Europe, but is slightly larger.
