The Great Egret is a one of the largest wading birds in the Americas and always a wonderful species to observe in wetland habitats. I found several indviduals in both the north and south of Cuba, but my best opportunity to photograph them came on the island of Cayo Ensenachos, 20kms offshore from the northern coast. It’s part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago a string of coral reefs and low mangrove forests with a number of shallow saltwater lagoons that are ideal for wading birds.
I found this indvidiual perched in the mangroves just after dawn and the low bright light created a lovely contrast to show off this species against his green and blue natural surroundings.
