A Great Egret looks out over the Las Salinas wetlands in Cuba. The wide shallow expanses of saltwater lagoon in the southern part of the Cienaga de Zapata National Park are a dream for any wildlife photographer. Although there are large numbers of birds, some like the Great Egret are solitary hunters and it’s possible to isolate them within the landscape.
This image was made in the early afternoon and the high sun was bleaching a lot of the colour out of the scene. I visualised this image with this mono high-key processing from the outset. I was looking for a composition that showed one of the large wading bird species in the context of its environment and this seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
