I believe nature reveals most about itself and is at its most beautiful when it’s in transition. Which is why Autumn is by far my favourite season of the year, as the full bloom of summer lingers in the scenery but begins to wane, creating wonderful colours. Chilly mornings give a crispness to the atmosphere. offset by ethereal mists. Coincidentally and on a far more practical level it also allows the photographer better access to the best conditions at the beginning of the day. 5.30am starts are more practical than 3am starts!

With all these things in mind I set off this morning to a lovely location near the village of Beaulieu, Hampshire about 30 mins drive from my home. Hatchet Pond is the largest body of water in the New Forest, during summer daylight hours it can be besieged by tourists and daytrippers, but this morning when I arrived I was the only person there, bliss!
