The Western Spindalis is a songbird endemic to the Greater Antilles region of the Caribbean. I found this one on Cayo Las Brujas, an island about 20kms off the northern coast of Cuba.
This bird has had a recent re-classificiation and change of name. It was known as the Stripe-Headed Tanager, as it was thought to be an aberrant member of the Tanager family, but the four species of the genus Spindalis have now been formally recognised in their own right.
