White Lion
AVAILABLE TO BUY:
White Lions are one of nature’s puzzles.
They are not a separate species, but carry a genetic colour mutation which gives them their pale appearance. Revered by some southern african tribes as a sacred animal, they are both an icon and an anomaly with an uncertain place in Africa’s modern wild landscape. The vast majority of white lions (including the one in this image) are held in captivity, having been eradicated completely by hunters from the wild. Even their conservation has been done with both good and bad intent. The White Lion Protection Trust has managed successful re-introduction of white lions to the Timbavati region, their traditional stronghold. But there are camps in South Africa that also breed them with the explicit purpose of trophy-hunting, a hideous abuse of these great creatures.
What is clear is that all african lions are in urgent need of conservation. Less than 20,000 remain across the entire continent.
Buying a print of this image directly contributes to the conservation work of LionAid, please give them your support.
